Tracey Tremayne-Lloyd successfully defends reputation of prominent Toronto cosmetic surgeon

Tracey Tremayne-Lloyd, in a 12-day hearing, cleared the reputation of Dr. Joseph Ka-Hoi Wong who had been charged with two counts of professional misconduct by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario after a woman contacted the College claiming she was twice coerced into sex.

Throughout the hearing, Dr. Wong vehemently denied any inappropriate conduct or sexual activity. In the decision released July 30 the five-person disciplinary panel indicated they had serious reservations about the patient's testimony as she continued to see the doctor after the alleged events and demanded money from Dr. Wong. His refusal to pay led to the complainant's charges. Ms Tremayne- Lloyd noted that the disciplinary process and publicity had been costly for Dr. Wong a philanthropist and respected member of the Chinese community.

Jeff Rosekat becomes President of Justice for Children and Youth

Jeff Rosekat has been asked to serve as President of Justice for Children and Youth, a legal aid clinic which provides representation to low-income children and youth in and around Toronto. Jeff has served as a member of the Board of Directors of Justice for Children and Youth since February of this year.

Supreme Court of Canada restricts the type of damages that can be recovered by wrongfully dismissed employees

Recent Supreme Court of Canada decision will have chilling effects on wrongful dismissal lawsuits

Over the past few decades, employment law has seen a number of significant shifts in the power struggle between employers and employees. For the most part, those shifts favoured employees as courts expanded their ability to seek additional damages in wrongful dismissal cases. But in the recent decision of Honda Canada Inc. v. Keays, 2008 SCC 39, it can be strongly argued that Supreme Court of Canada has put employers back in the driver’s seat in the employment relationship.

Wage Earner Protection Program in effect

As of July 7, 2008, the Wage Earner Protection Program has come into force and effect. This provision is part of a number of changes to the insolvency statutes of Canada. The balance of the changes have not yet come into force and effect. The WEPP provides for a payment to terminated employees in a bankruptcy or receivership of up to $3000 and is secured to the extent of about $2000 over all secured and unsecured creditors out of current assets . Employees terminated as a result of a bankruptcy or receivership are entitled to apply to the government for payment.

Cherie Brant spoke at the 7th Annual World Wind Energy Conference held June 24th - 26th, 2008 in Kingston, Ontario. Over 800 participants were in attendance to this worldrenowned renewable energy conference, attracting an international consortium of policymakers, business people and financiers, researchers, environmental NGO representatives. Cherie spoke about First Nations Renewable Energy Projects - Issues and Opportunities. Cherie Brant was also selected among a group of professionals to provide advice on a Community Power Investment Fund design charette, which took place at the conference.
